Patti LaBelle’s Nephew Blames Trump Support for Family Rift—and Fans Rush to Her Defense

William “Byl” Holte says his support for Donald Trump helped destroy his relationship with the legendary singer, but Patti LaBelle’s own past words—and a fierce online reaction—tell a more complicated story.

Patti LaBelle Nephew Donald Trump Support

Patti LaBelle has spent more than six decades commanding stages, surviving an unforgiving music industry and establishing herself as one of America’s most beloved vocal legends.

Now, an intensely personal family dispute has unexpectedly placed the 82-year-old singer at the center of another kind of spotlight.

William “Byl” Holte, LaBelle’s nephew and adopted son, has publicly accused his famous aunt of cutting him out of her life following years of tension that he says was caused in part by his support for President Donald Trump.

Holte’s account has turned what might otherwise have remained a private family estrangement into a viral celebrity controversy involving politics, money, free speech and one of music’s most recognizable personalities.

But there is an important complication.

LaBelle herself addressed their political differences publicly years ago—and what she said at the time paints a considerably more subtle picture than the one now being presented.

Meanwhile, social media users have overwhelmingly rushed to the singer’s defense.

Byl Holte Says His Relationship With Patti LaBelle Collapsed

Holte brought the dispute into public view with a lengthy post on X on August 20. He said that around Christmas 2019, LaBelle informed him that he would have to leave a property where he said he had lived for approximately 12 years.

According to Holte, an argument followed after he heard relatives discussing Donald Trump and why they viewed him as a threat.

Holte says he challenged the family over that characterization of Trump while facing the prospect of leaving LaBelle’s home.

He alleges that the confrontation eventually contributed to him being pushed out of the household. Years later, Holte says he and LaBelle remain estranged.

He characterized his current status within the family as a “lifetime banishment” and claimed that members of LaBelle’s circle no longer communicate with him because she does not.

Those are serious claims. They are also, at this stage, Holte’s version of events.

LaBelle has not publicly responded to his latest allegations, and there has been no independent confirmation that his support for Trump was the sole—or even primary—reason he was originally told to leave the property.

That distinction matters considerably.

Their Relationship Goes Much Deeper Than Aunt and Nephew

The dispute is particularly emotional because Holte is not simply a distant relative of the singer.

He is the son of LaBelle’s younger sister Jacqueline “Jackie” Holte-Padgett, who died in 1989 following a battle with brain cancer.

After her sister’s death, LaBelle took in William and his sister Stayce and adopted them. That history changed their relationship from aunt and nephew into something much closer to parent and child.

Holte has said he spent years living on a family property and helping LaBelle with various responsibilities.

According to reporting on his latest claims, he has described himself as having worked as her personal assistant while also helping with gardening and caring for pets.

That makes the current estrangement far more significant than a celebrity simply disagreeing with a politically outspoken relative.

This is a relationship built over decades. And that history is precisely why LaBelle’s own previous comments are so important.

Patti LaBelle Addressed Their Political Divide Years Ago

Holte first became widely known outside LaBelle’s family in 2020 during one of the stranger episodes of that year’s political discourse.

Dean Browning, a white Republican politician from Pennsylvania, posted a message on Twitter that was written from the perspective of a Black gay man praising Trump.

Browning later said he had accidentally posted a message sent to him by a supporter. That supporter was identified as Holte, who subsequently appeared publicly and defended his political views.

The controversy inevitably reached LaBelle. But when Oprah Daily asked the singer in December 2020 how she handled their political disagreement, LaBelle did not describe herself as rejecting Holte because he was Republican.

Quite the opposite. LaBelle acknowledged that they saw politics very differently while making clear that she continued to care about him.

“I love Billy,” she said at the time. She explained that having different political beliefs did not mean she hated him and said that Holte had recently apologized during a telephone conversation.

What appeared to matter more to LaBelle was whether her own name became part of his controversies.

She told Oprah Daily that she was willing to give people another chance, while drawing a clear boundary around being dragged into someone else’s mistakes.

That interview occurred after the Christmas 2019 confrontation Holte is now describing. And that chronology complicates the idea that his Trump support led immediately to a permanent political exile from LaBelle’s life.

By late 2020, LaBelle was publicly saying they had spoken and that she still loved him. Something appears to have deteriorated after that.

Exactly what happened remains unclear.

Holte Says Speaking Publicly Made the Situation Worse

Holte’s latest account indicates that politics may not have been the only source of tension. He claims LaBelle objected more recently to him discussing their relationship publicly.

According to Holte, his decision to speak about his life with LaBelle contributed to the current complete estrangement. That detail may prove critical.

There is a major difference between cutting off a relative because of how he votes and cutting off a relative because private family matters repeatedly become public content.

LaBelle’s 2020 comments also appear relevant here. Even while expressing love for Holte, she made clear that involving her name in his controversies crossed a line.

Six years later, her name is once again attached to a viral political story involving him. Holte sees the dispute differently.

He has framed his ability to discuss his own experiences publicly as a free-speech issue and says he refuses to apologize for choosing his own political beliefs.

He also maintains that he would rather support a political party by choice than feel obligated to vote a particular way. But the public reaction has focused less on his party affiliation than on another question: Was LaBelle obligated to continue providing him with a home or access to her life?

Social Media Users Rush to Patti LaBelle’s Defense

Once Holte’s claims began circulating, the response was instant.

A post about the controversy in Reddit’s PopCultureChat community attracted more than 13,000 votes, while another discussion in BlackPeopleofReddit drew similarly enormous engagement.

And many users had remarkably little sympathy for Holte. One of the most popular comments stated: “Her house, her rules. She doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.”

That comment alone accumulated thousands of votes. Another user zeroed in on Holte’s description of having “shared” the home with LaBelle: “‘shared with her’ when she 10000% owned it is crazy.”

Others questioned Holte’s invocation of the First Amendment. One commenter wrote: “It means you can’t be punished from the GOVERNMENT. Family can cut you out for anything. Including vibes.”

Another was even more succinct: “Miss Patti is not the government.” The reactions were not limited to Reddit.

According to Atlanta Black Star, commenters elsewhere on social media similarly rallied around LaBelle. One declared: “No Patti slander will be tolerated.”

Another joked: “We’re not talking to you either.” And a third wrote: “I wish I could’ve heard her cuss him out.”

Taken together, the comments reveal how differently much of the public interpreted Holte’s story from the way he apparently intended it.

Rather than viewing LaBelle primarily as someone punishing a relative for political dissent, many users saw an adult family member complaining that access to a famous and wealthy relative had ended.

One Phrase Dominated the Debate: ‘Her House, Her Rules’

The phrase appeared repeatedly throughout various discussions. In another Reddit community, one user stated: “Her house her rules, she can kick him out for eating lentils.”

The joke captured the central argument being made by LaBelle’s defenders. Whatever anyone thinks of the family’s political disagreement, they argue, owning a home does not create an indefinite obligation to house another adult.

The same logic extended to Holte’s free-speech argument.

The First Amendment generally protects Americans from government restrictions on speech; it does not guarantee that private individuals must continue relationships, provide housing or tolerate speech they find objectionable.

That point became one of the most repeated themes in the social discussion. Another highly rated Reddit commenter wrote: “You aren’t owed access to her house.”

It is an unusually straightforward public response to what Holte presented as a story about political intolerance.

The Story May Be More About Family Boundaries Than Trump

Politics certainly appears to have played a role in the tensions between LaBelle and Holte. Their ideological differences are not disputed.

LaBelle has long been associated with Democratic politicians and previously performed for Barack Obama, while Holte has publicly expressed conservative views and supported Trump.

But reducing their entire estrangement to Republican versus Democrat could oversimplify what appears to be a complicated family history.

Even Holte’s own account contains multiple potential sources of conflict: He was told to move out. A family quarrel erupted.

He continued discussing family matters publicly. LaBelle allegedly objected. And eventually communication stopped.

Meanwhile, LaBelle’s only substantial public comments about their political differences remain markedly less antagonistic than Holte’s current description of the relationship.

In 2020, she talked about love, forgiveness and giving people chances. She also talked about boundaries. That final part may now be the most revealing.

Patti LaBelle Has Remained Silent

Perhaps the most striking element of the controversy is that LaBelle herself has not joined it. Holte has published his version of events.

News outlets have picked it up. Social media users have debated it. But the woman at the center of the story has not publicly responded to his latest accusations.

That silence leaves significant unanswered questions. Why was Holte originally asked to leave the property?

What happened between their apparently conciliatory phone conversation in 2020 and the present-day estrangement?

Was politics actually the decisive factor? Did public discussion of private family matters become the larger problem?

And is their current relationship truly beyond repair? Only the people involved know those answers.

Fans Have Already Delivered Their Verdict

Holte may have meant his story as an example of how partisan division can tear apart families.

Instead, the reaction has largely transformed the controversy into a referendum on Patti LaBelle’s right to establish boundaries in her own home and personal life.

That is partly a reflection of LaBelle’s extraordinary public reputation. For generations of fans, she is not simply a singer.

She is “Auntie Patti”—the glamorous, outspoken Philadelphia powerhouse behind classics including “If Only You Knew,” “New Attitude” and “On My Own.”

That affection was evident throughout the reaction. In one Reddit thread, the simplest comment may have said everything: “I like her.”

A reply immediately added: “even more.”

Holte’s allegations have undoubtedly exposed a painful fracture inside one of music’s most famous families.

But they have not, at least so far, damaged Patti LaBelle’s standing with many of her fans. If anything, the opposite appears to have happened.

For now, LaBelle is saying nothing. The internet is doing plenty of talking for her.
